I gave up a 25 year old ancient washing machine when I bought this Whirlpool Duet Sport Frontload. I wish I had my old ancient one back! I have hated this Whirlpool washer almost ever since I bought it. The front door does not seal properly, I have to give it a hip check every time I close the door and even then I am not guaranteed it won't leak during the cycle. I am way past my warranty period and am stuck with it, they do not even list the sport unit on Whirlpools website anymore. As well as leaking all our clothes come out with our hair and the cats hair on them, it does not filter properly. DO NOT BUY THIS WASHER!
I was really excited when we first got this washer. It was quiet, used less water than a top loader, got our clothes clean and spun out so much water at the end that our dryer had less wear and tear. The honeymoon was short lived because soon the washer started leaking onto the floor. Hubby did lots of research online and made several repairs and replaced several parts himself which saved us a lot on repair bills. About 4 years into this though and the washer constantly either leaks or pours water onto the floor with every load (fortunately it is in our basement with a floor drain nearby, so we haven't had any major disasters. When we take the washer apart, it is easy to see that there are a few really bad design flaws that cause the gasketing and hoses to get repeatedly chewed up. There's just no way around it. Currently, in addition to the leaking, the washer has started banging loudly as it spins. Bad news for us this time around as this appears to be an expensive, deal-breaking repair. I think I agree with another reviewer - I don't think we'll buy another Whirlpool. We bought a new Whirlpool refrigerator a few years ago and it doesn't appear to be of good design or quality either.
We bought this washer almost 3 years ago and it just died on us today and the repairman said it will be in the upwards of $400 to fix. I think we will just buy a new washer. My sister-in-law has the same washer and her motherboard panel died 3 months into having hers so at least it was under warranty but we both have had major problems with this washer and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It is much cheaper than all the rest for a reason. Spend the extra money and get a middle line version instead of a cheap front load washer.
Let me put it simply. Whirlpool does not believe in their own products. "How can you make such a statement?!" you ask... Well they bought out their second warrantee from us. What does this mean? They bought us out of the second warrantee we purchased because it cost too much to repair. Simply just gave us out warrantee money back. Whirlpool wanted nothing to do with it anymore. This is why I no longer see them in reputable store chains anymore. HAVE SOME WHIRLPOOL!!!!
Never again will I buy a Whirlpool product. I am so disappointed with this machine. Like everyone says, the vibration problem in horrific--it does the hula in my kitchen every time it spins--and when the seal breaks, it's no fun cleaning up all the water and putting out more money for repairs. Do yourself a major favor: DON'T BUY THE WHIRLPOOL DUET SPORT WASHER!
I have a Duet that is not even 2 years old and the top weight sheered off of the tub of the washing machine ruining the entire machine. Called whirlpool and they were "real sorry. but we only give a 1 year war.' The reason for the 1 year war? Its a terribly designed washer and too much use on medium or high spin and it will sheer your weights. There are 2 large concrete blocks inside the machine that try to keep it in balance. It is a terrible design and set for failure. The blocks are held on with three screws in to a plastic mount! Its a 10 lb weight held with plastic. I would stay away from this machine. Whirlpool is not the whirlpool of 20 years ago.
Bought Whirlpool Duet Sport W & D combo from Costco mid-2007 for $1600. Just had 2 separate techs confirm circuit board(s) fried - $450 to repair. Have an old top loader from 1994 that I can't kill. I would like to see the reactions of people as they walk buy what appears to be a brand-new front loader sitting on the curb...maybe someone will take it away.
It worked for 2 years without a problem. Now the machine is constantly flashing error codes. Usually F 21 (pump) or the suds error. After Googling the problem I followed the instructions for clearing out the pump which for a few months worked very well. Now the damn machine displays the error code but after draining the machine with a bucket, checking the pump I now find nothing clogging the pump. I then reassemble the machine which works. I start a new cycle but then the damn error code again. The error codes used to only flash every few months but now I am getting them on a monthly basis. Avoid this machine!
We bought our duet sport 5 years ago and have had nothing but heartache. We have spent $1600 in repair costs and it is broken again. If you buy this, make sure you have a spare washer for all the out of service time you spend waiting on repairs and buy the extended warranty. I will never buy another whirlpool appliance. The only reason it gets one star: when working, it cleans the clothes very well. Side note: it takes constant bleach and maintenance to prevent massive mold growth in the machine.

It's sad that this once-great American company has become so unreliable.
