Had washer for only 6 months and the bearings went bad. If I were to have had to fix it the cost would be over $1300.00. (Parts were over $1200.00)The repair man suggest I take out an extended warrenty as this is a very common problem with the Whirlpool Duet. I called Whirlpool why they wouldn't just replace the unit as it would be cheaper for them then to replace then to repair and they said this is their rules and could not give any other explanation. It took two guys to repair and 3 hours as the unit had to be completely taken apart. I would think twice before buying another unit from Whirlpool.
I purchased a matching, top-of-the-line Duet Steam set with FanFresh in Nov. 2009 (propane gas dryer), and so far have nothing but praise for the machines. Not only my own laundry (I live alone), but my summer cottage tenants use them as well. Had one problem with the dryer-the brain went somewhat nuts; unplugged, powered back up and no more problems. More recently had the washer shut down (with the door locked!) and give a F-01 code. Turned machine off, back on, restarted the same cycle, and so far no further problems. I had an earlier Duet pair in my old house-had them for about 7 years, and not one problem. As to the poor customer service-unfortunately, that seems to be the new American way of doing business. We'll need to do better than that if we ever hope to get our manufacturing base back, which means people need to really make a stink (perhaps enlisting the help of Consumers Union, etc.). They don't pay much attention to individuals, but there's power in numbers-if they see notable losses of sales in the future, they'll change their tune.
We bought the duet set in a brown to match the closet in our master in April 2009. It was very heavy to get to second floor but we have loved our set! No problems except for a slight tear in the rubber seal of washer and the door needs to be closed rather firmly to start a cycle which should be improved. Gets clothes super clean and love the delay wash option! I have seen different t machines with the better door from other brands.
Just stay away from anything manufactured by Whirlpool (they also own Kitchen Aid, Maytag, Amana and several other main brands), which basically leaves you with LG and BOSCH. I wish I would have purchased the BOSCH, but it didn't have the steam feature I wanted...screw steam, buy something else other then Whirlpool.
I've had the Whirlpool Steam Duet set for about three years now. Both the washer and dryer have been disappointing purchases. Specific to the washer is a fragile mother board and poor design on the very expensive front seal. The tiniest nick to the seal caused by a stray zipper edge cost about $350; it doesn't make sense to have a washing machine that is so fragile that forgetting to zip a garment causes destruction of the seal. The set is also extremely heavy, making cleaning around them and inspection of duct work very difficult. The washer depth is also too large for our laundry closet, which was standard size in 2004. I've modified the doors to the closet so that they swing out and allow me to access the bleach tray. My next set will be a less expensive and hopefully more reliable model of another brand.
When we first purchased this washer I was thrilled at all the features it came with. But now it has been 6 months and we have had to service it twice. The first service was simple, it sucked a baby sock into the water pump and would not drain, the service tech showed my husband how to fix since this apparently happens regularly. The second time a bearing has went out, it has been 5 weeks and the part is back ordered and they don't have any idea when I will get my washer back. We have three small children and a ton of laundry. We lose our borrowed washer in 4 days and will have to purchase a new washer or lug my laundry somewhere else for who knows how long. I am not a satisfied customer!
as an aside - machine is ridiculously noisy even when functioning "properly" and routinely ties clothes in knots during washing. have had numerous problems with the dryer from this set as well.
DO NOT BUY THIS!!!! I have the exact problem as another reviewer. My washer was bought new directly from Whirlpool. 15 months later, the bearing is blown. Repair person just left my house this morning and said that repair will be very expensive: stainless steel basket, washer tub, motor belt, and front counter weight all need to be replaced. I don't have written estimate but when looking at these parts online, the cost for just parts is over $800 and repair tech estimated about $250 in labor charges. I have not called Whirlpool yet and dont have high hopes based on other reviewers' experiences. It looks like I need a new washer, and it won't be Whirlpool!
